Turning 2009
Like many of my books, Turning, represents a physical object turned into data. The object was a small piece of wood, a piece of Eucalypt branch found on a walk, a spiral shaped walk up and around Black Mountain, Canberra. Each page is a relief print, taken from a slice of the branch which has been finely polished. Using fine Japanese paper and careful printing, every detail of the shape of that surface can be recreated on the page. While a book represents a sequence of stages, each page separate, the translucency of the paper also allows the shape of the whole journey to be percieved at once.
